The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) Malta & Gozo recently visited the Camp Willingness Summer Camp, as part of its commitment to supporting local initiatives that promote inclusion, creativity, and personal development to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children from diverse social backgrounds.
Led by a team of dedicated psychologists and educators, Camp Willingness offers a safe, structured and engaging environment where children aged four to 12 build confidence, emotional skills, friendships and independence through themed activities, play and real-life learning experiences.
Using a blend of yoga, mindfulness, gratitude exercises, crafts and physical activities, the Summer Camp offers an immersive environment where kids not only have a great time but also gain valuable insights about life.
The SAF team, comprising Stephen Griffiths, Angela De Conti Manduca, Susanne Boorman, Valerie Urrunaga and Ornella Yehoussi from Sovereign Malta’s office in Saint Julian’s, was warmly welcomed by the dedicated Camp Willingness supervisors and staff, whose passion and commitment were evident throughout the day.
We spent time meeting the children, observing activities, and learning more about the programme’s positive influence. The visit also included an engaging question-and-answer session with the older students, who enthusiastically shared their experiences and aspirations.
A particularly inspiring aspect of the visit was learning about ‘Baby Sig’ and the therapeutic books developed by Camp Willingness. Recognising the importance of emotional learning in childhood, these resources have been designed to help children better understand and express their emotions while strengthening resilience, empathy and self-awareness.
Developed by mental health professionals, Baby Sig and the accompanying books provide children, parents and caregivers with practical tools to explore feelings together. Through engaging, age-appropriate content, they encourage meaningful conversations and support emotional development.
Witnessing the enthusiasm of the children and the innovative approaches adopted by Camp Willingness served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community-driven programmes. By promoting emotional well-being alongside personal growth, Camp Willingness continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people and their families.
