LEGAL CONSULTANT

JOB DESCRIPTION

The role involves assisting members of the legal team in Guernsey. The role involves providing legal support to legal Director of Sovereign Pension Services (CI) Limited (Sovereign), primarily with client matters and where appropriate in respect of legal and regulatory items of Sovereign.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Due to the size of the organisation, the role necessitates a wide range of responsibilities, including carrying out appropriate research, assisting with projects and liaising with client services and compliance teams with regard to client queries concerning, primarily the pension services (both personal and occupational pensions) provided by Sovereign as well as providing cover for the members of the legal team that are involved with the fiduciary and corporate services provided by Sovereign Trust (Channel Islands) Limited. The role will also include an aspect of providing in-house training to staff.

DUTIES

Duties will include:

  • Assisting the legal team in respect of legal and regulatory matters;
  • Fielding enquiries from the client-facing teams;
  • Assisting heads of departments with enquiries from introducers, investments houses and clients;
  • Fielding enquiries from other Sovereign Group offices in respect of products and services provided by Sovereign Guernsey;
  • Fielding enquiries from the Compliance team;
  • Researching relevant laws, regulations, and guidance, and providing accurate and succinct summaries including suggestions as to how they might be implemented, and presenting findings where necessary;
  • Assisting with Data Protection, CRS/FATCA and other regulatory or reporting issues;
  • Drafting, reviewing and approving documentation relative to client matters such as consultancy agreements, loan agreements, investment advisory and management agreements, property transaction documents, deeds of transfer, trust deeds and supplementary deeds and deeds of indemnity;
  • Drafting and reviewing legal documentation relative to Sovereign such as non-disclosure agreements, contracts for services, property transactions and employment related documents;
  • Undertaking administrative matters;
  • Attending regular internal, DSO, and other meetings as required;
  • Assisting with regulatory, HR, health & safety and employment matters including suggestions as to how they might be improved;
  • Assisting with complaints received via the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman, liaising with the Ombudsman and providing timely updates to the legal Director or Borad of Directors;
  • Liaising with other group legal personnel and external Counsel;
  • Assisting colleagues with project work; and
  • Other duties as may be required from time to time in accordance with the demands of the role and development of the services provided.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
·       Qualified lawyerE
EXPERIENCE
·       Experience in the fiduciary services industry, ideally having hands on exposure to trust & company administration and /or compliance; orD

KNOWLEDGE
·       A good working knowledge of how to operate Word, Excel and e-mail system;E
